Canary Islands Pension Average Rises to 1,256 Euros But Gap Persists

The average pension in the Canary Islands rose by 4.8% in October, reaching 1,256.3 euros per month, yet a persistent structural gap keeps local payouts nearly 120 euros below the national average. Official data released by the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration show that the national average stands at 1,376.14 euros, leaving a notable margin between the archipelago and the rest of the country despite local growth.
Across the islands, the total number of pension beneficiaries climbed to 385,529 individuals, representing an increase of 2.7% compared to the same period a year earlier. Meanwhile, nationally, the Social Security administration disbursed a record monthly contributory payroll expenditure of 14,539.9 million euros, marking a 6.3% rise over October of the previous year. Overall across Spain, the system covered 10,565,782 pensions, a 1.6% increase, distributed among more than 9.5 million people.
A breakdown of the figures across the islands demonstrates that retirement payouts remain by far the most common form of assistance. A total of 219,493 retired individuals receive an average monthly amount of 1,460.42 euros. Widowhood benefits follow as the second largest category, supporting 84,082 beneficiaries with an average of 919.88 euros per month.
Additional categories include permanent disability benefits, which account for 63,086 recipients averaging 1,202.02 euros monthly. Orphanhood pensions reach 16,171 individuals at an average of 525.01 euros, while assistance designated for other family members supports 2,697 people with an average monthly payout of 800.15 euros.

Nationwide figures for the broader system reflect a general revaluation approved by the government, mirroring the average Consumer Price Index between December 2024 and November 2025. The general system revaluation reached 2.7%, pushing the national average pension to 1,376.14 euros, a 4.6% year-on-year increase. Nationally, retirement pensions, which make up more than two-thirds of all recipients, reached an average of 1,577.6 euros per month, representing a 4.5% annual increase.
Nearly three-quarters of the total national expenditure on contributory pensions went toward retirement allocations, totaling 10,692 million euros, a 6.9% increase over the previous year. Despite these nationwide increases and the 4.8% growth recorded locally in the Canary Islands, the regional average continues to trail the national benchmark by nearly 120 euros each month.
