Mikel Arteta Dismisses David Raya’s La Liga Ambitions With Summer Vacation Quip

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has lightheartedly dismissed goalkeeper David Raya’s ambition to eventually play in his native Spain, joking that the shot-stopper’s only immediate chance of playing soccer in La Liga will be during a summer holiday.

Raya recently sparked speculation regarding his long-term career path after revealing in an interview that he would love to experience the Spanish top flight. The goalkeeper admitted that while he remains very happy at Arsenal, he holds a personal desire to play for a Spanish club in the future.

Unlike many elite players, Raya has never played professional club soccer in Spain. Born and raised in Barcelona, he began his youth development at UE Cornellà before making a pivotal move to England at just 16 years old in 2012. He initially landed at Blackburn Rovers, where he eventually broke into the first team and served as the club’s starting goalkeeper for the 2017–18 and 2018–19 seasons.

Following a subsequent stint at Brentford, Arteta identified Raya in 2023 as an essential upgrade for Arsenal, moving to secure his signature ahead of Aaron Ramsdale. The decision has yielded significant success, with Raya claiming three consecutive Premier League Golden Gloves and earning recognition as a contender for the Yashin Trophy at the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony. Though not a regular starter for the Spanish national team, he has remained a fixture in national squads and holds European Championship and World Cup winner honors, leaving a stint in La Liga as a notable omission on his resume.

When asked about his goalkeeper’s comments during a press conference, Arteta responded with characteristic humor. “I think David has to play in Spain at some point … on the beach with his friends in the summer,” the Arsenal boss said. “For the next few years, he needs to play here for Arsenal.” Arteta himself spent the vast majority of his playing career abroad, though he made a limited number of appearances for Barcelona B and Real Sociedad.

Raya’s current contract runs through June 2028, meaning he has entered the final two years of his deal. At 31 years old, he is well-positioned to maintain a high level of performance for several seasons, and he will be nearly 33 by the time his current agreement expires. Given Arteta’s firm stance on retaining his services, Arsenal are expected to work toward securing his future at the club beyond 2028.

Should Raya eventually seek a move to La Liga, prospective destinations present distinct structural and timeline questions. Barcelona, a natural stylistic and geographic fit given his upbringing, recently invested in Joan García, who has established himself and earned a Yashin Trophy nomination alongside Raya. Real Madrid could potentially present an opening in the future depending on the timeline of Thibaut Courtois, while Atlético Madrid features a similar dynamic with Jan Oblak.

Other alternatives could include Espanyol, located near his childhood roots in the Cornellà de Llobregat neighborhood, or a romantic return to UE Cornellà. However, the latter option remains a distant prospect as the club currently competes in the fifth-tier Tercera Federación, requiring a significant ascent through the Spanish league pyramid to reach the top division.
