Michigan Men’s Basketball Faces No. 10 Houston in Grand Rapids Exhibition Finale

The defending national champion and 16th-ranked University of Michigan men’s basketball team will conclude its three-game exhibition schedule on Sunday, October 25, taking on No. 10 Houston in a neutral-site matchup dubbed The Battleground 2k26. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. at Van Andel Arena in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, with the game streamed live on B1G+.
The contest serves both competitive and charitable purposes, supporting children in the Grand Rapids area while offering regional fans a chance to see the reigning national titleholders ahead of the regular season. The venue itself is celebrating its 30th anniversary, having opened on October 8, 1996, and serves as the home arena for the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins and the NBA G League’s Grand Rapids Gold.
Michigan enters the exhibition finale carrying a 2-0 record. The Wolverines opened their exhibition slate at home with an 87-62 victory over Eastern Michigan on October 11, followed by a tight 98-93 win against Oregon State on October 16. Across those two matchups, Michigan has accumulated 185 points, maintaining an average of 92.5 points per contest.
Individual performances have highlighted the early outings for the Wolverines. In the win over Oregon State, Elliot Cadeau paced the squad with a game-high 27 points—sparked by a 26-point explosion in the second half—while contributing eight assists. Moustapha Thiam turned in a double-double with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists, and Trey McKenney chipped in 18 points. McKenney had previously led the scoring effort against Eastern Michigan with 21 points, complemented by a 16-point performance off the bench from freshman Quinn Costello, which included four three-pointers.
Sunday’s meeting renews a historical series that Michigan leads 3-1 overall. The programs first met in 1962 and played again in 1966, with Michigan claiming both victories, before Houston secured a 91-65 win in 1968. Their most recent encounter came during the second round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament in Wichita, Kansas, where Jordan Poole hit a dramatic buzzer-beating three-pointer to lift the Wolverines to a 64-63 win and advance them to the Sweet 16 during a run that ultimately reached the national championship game.
Under head coach Kelvin Sampson, Houston enters the matchup as a perennial powerhouse, having advanced to eight consecutive NCAA Tournaments, reached the Final Four in 2021 and 2025, and played in the 2025 national championship game where they fell 65-63 to Florida. The Cougars finished the 2025-26 campaign with a 30-7 record, securing their seventh straight Sweet 16 appearance and their fifth consecutive 30-win season, tying an NCAA Division I record.
Following Sunday’s clash in Grand Rapids, Michigan will have an eight-day layoff before officially tipping off the regular season against Oakland on Monday, November 2, at Crisler Center. The upcoming regular-season campaign marks the first under Mike Boynton Jr., who serves as the David and Meredith Kaplan Men’s Basketball Head Coach after being elevated to the position in the wake of the program’s 2026 national championship run.
