Mavericks Stars Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving Sidelined for Home Opener Against Spurs

The Dallas Mavericks will take the floor for their home opener against the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday night without their two primary offensive stars. Both Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving have been officially ruled out for the contest, leaving the team significantly shorthanded for the first home game of the season.
Flagg’s absence follows a mild left shoulder sprain sustained during Friday’s victory over the Indiana Pacers. According to the team, an MRI performed Saturday confirmed the extent of the injury, and the rookie standout is scheduled to be reevaluated next week. This marks the second time the young star has dealt with left shoulder issues this month, following a minor injury against the Oklahoma City Thunder on October 27, though he did not miss playing time during that previous stretch.
The injury occurred in the final minute of the second quarter on Friday night. Flagg was fouled hard by Pacers guard Aaron Nesmith during a dunk attempt, causing him to land awkwardly on his arm. As Flagg remained on the floor clutching his shoulder, teammate Naji Marshall confronted Nesmith regarding the foul. At the time of his exit, Flagg was on the verge of a historic performance, recording 14 points, five rebounds, six assists, three steals, and a block, putting him on pace for his first career triple-double.
While Flagg is dealing with a specific physical ailment, Kyrie Irving was ruled out just hours before tipoff due to “injury management.” Mavericks head coach Dusty May explained the decision as a response to a demanding early-season schedule. The Mavericks are currently in a stretch that includes three games in four nights, and the Saturday matchup serves as the second half of the team’s first back-to-back set of the year.
The two stars are part of a staggering injury report that lists 10 total players for Saturday’s game. Beyond Flagg and Irving, the Mavericks are monitoring several other rotations. Max Christie is dealing with a right shin contusion, Morez Johnson Jr. is hampered by right shin splints, and Zaccharie Risacher is struggling with right hip soreness; all three were listed as questionable heading into the evening. Jett Howard was considered doubtful due to a right calf strain.
Long-term absences continue to plague the roster as well. The team remains without Santi Aldama and Dereck Lively II, both of whom are recovering from surgeries on their right knee and right foot, respectively. Additionally, Tarik Biberovic is out with right heel bursitis, and Caleb Martin is sidelined by a right thumb sprain.
With both Flagg and Irving unavailable against San Antonio, Coach May will look to P.J. Washington and Naji Marshall to provide offensive stability and veteran leadership. The team’s depth will be tested immediately, as the Mavericks begin a busy week that includes a road trip to Miami on Monday followed by home games against the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Houston Rockets.
