LAPD Officer Hospitalized After Suspect Armed With Metal Bar Is Shot in Downtown LA

A downtown Los Angeles street confrontation turned violent Saturday afternoon, leaving both an armed suspect and a police officer hospitalized after an officer-involved shooting.
The incident began at approximately 1:25 p.m. on Saturday when patrol officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Division responded to a radio broadcast reporting a robbery in the vicinity of 4th Street and Omar Street.
Upon arrival, responding officers encountered an adult male who was armed with a metal bar in one hand and a long tree branch in the other. According to the department, officers repeatedly ordered the individual to drop the weapons, but he refused to comply with the commands.
In an attempt to subdue the suspect without deadly force, officers deployed less-lethal foam rounds, which proved ineffective. The suspect then charged at the officers, striking one of them with the metal bar.

Police subsequently opened fire, striking the man. Officers took the suspect into custody at the scene and transported him to a local hospital for medical treatment.
The injured officer was also taken to a hospital. Both the suspect and the wounded officer were listed in stable condition following the incident, according to law enforcement officials.

Investigators recovered the metal bar at the scene as evidence. Authorities confirmed that no other injuries were reported during the broad-daylight encounter.
The LAPD emphasized that the details released are preliminary as the investigation remains in its early stages. Police officials added that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
