Kenya Confirms Second Ebola Death as Health Authorities Monitor Isolation Cases

Kenya has reported its second fatality linked to the ongoing Ebola virus outbreak, after a 65-year-old woman who was a close family member of the country’s index patient succumbed to the disease. The patient was the third confirmed case in Kenya and had already been placed in quarantine when she began showing symptoms on October 13, according to an official statement released by the Ministry of Health.

This recent loss raises the total death toll to two among a total of nine confirmed cases recorded in the country. The remaining seven patients are currently receiving medical treatment and monitoring across two dedicated isolation facilities, health officials confirmed.

The country’s current outbreak originated from an initial case linked to travel from the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo, where infections attributed to the Bundibugyo strain have surpassed 9,700 cases alongside more than 4,700 deaths. The index patient had suffered from illness for weeks, seeking medical care at multiple facilities within Congo before undertaking a journey that involved traveling by road through Uganda and subsequently taking a flight from Entebbe to Nairobi on October 3.

Despite initial difficulties faced by authorities in tracking down the traveller’s primary contacts, public health officials have successfully located and quarantined all individuals who may have been exposed. Infections in Kenya have remained strictly contained within a single cluster associated directly with the initial patient.

The broader regional outbreak, which originated in Congo, has now expanded to three other nations, most recently spreading to Nigeria. Public health data indicates this event represents the second-largest Ebola outbreak in recorded history.
