Katerina Siniakova Dominates Ashlyn Krueger to Win Japan Open

Katerina Siniakova secured her first singles title since 2023 with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ashlyn Krueger in the final of the Japan Open in Osaka on Sunday.
The Czech player needed just 64 minutes to dispatch her opponent, taking control of the match early in the first set. After claiming a 2-1 lead, Siniakova reeled off 10 consecutive games to seal the championship and capture her sixth career singles title on the WTA Tour.
Statistically, Siniakova dominated the baseline exchanges. She finished the match with a winner-to-unforced-error ratio of 0.84, hitting 16 winners against 19 unforced errors. Krueger struggled to find her rhythm in her third career tour-level final, recording a ratio of 0.29 with 10 winners and 34 unforced errors.
“I played a very good match,” Siniakova said following her victory. “I don’t remember when I played so well. Everything was going my way, so I really enjoyed it. I had a lot of confidence. I’m just really proud of how I played.”
The triumph marks a notable milestone for Siniakova, who is currently ranked as the world’s top doubles player. Her last singles title came in Nanchang in 2023, and Sunday’s win improved her career record in WTA singles finals to 6-5. Reflecting on her return to Osaka after a 14-year absence, she expressed enthusiasm for the remainder of the season, noting her upcoming travel to Guangzhou and subsequent events.
Siniakova’s path to the championship required her to navigate a competitive draw that included dropping only a single set all week. En route to the final, she defeated Mary Stoiana, Magda Linette, eighth seed Katie Boulter, and second seed Peyton Stearns.
For Krueger, the defeat brings her record in tour-level finals to 1-2, following her previous title victory at the Japan Open in 2023. The American mounted an impressive run to reach her first tour-level final of the season, defeating top seed Ann Li, fourth seed Talia Gibson, Lanlana Tararudee, and sixth seed Janice Tjen before falling to Siniakova in the championship match.
