Holbrook Police Bodycam Footage Captures Dramatic Rescue of Driver From Burning Jeep

Three Massachusetts police officers pulled a trapped motorist from a burning vehicle early Sunday morning following a violent crash in Holbrook that knocked down a utility pole and scattered low-hanging live wires across the roadway, according to local authorities. The driver, whose identity has not yet been released by police, is now facing multiple criminal charges.
The incident unfolded at approximately 3:20 a.m. on Sunday when emergency responders were dispatched to the scene of a severe single-vehicle accident. According to a preliminary police investigation, the vehicle—a Jeep—veered off the road, struck a utility pole, collided with a tree, and ultimately crashed into a retaining wall. The impact caused substantial damage to several nearby properties and snapped the utility pole in half, leaving electrical wires dangling dangerously over the street while fire quickly engulfed the front end of the automobile.
Officer Jonathan O’Brien was the first law enforcement personnel to arrive at the hectic scene. Upon his arrival, a witness informed him that the driver remained trapped inside the burning wreckage. O’Brien rushed to the vehicle and made contact with the motorist, who stated that his right foot was pinned beneath the dashboard and he was unable to escape. Police later confirmed that the driver’s foot and sneaker had caught fire as the flames advanced.
Realizing the immediate peril, O’Brien was quickly joined by Sgt. Martin Faherty and Officer Matthew Richards. The three officers coordinated their efforts to wrench the vehicle and free the trapped driver. Once he was dislodged from the wreckage, Faherty and Richards dragged the motorist away from the burning Jeep to a safe distance. During the intense rescue operation, Officer O’Brien sustained minor burns to his fingers.

Members of the Holbrook Fire Department arrived shortly afterward to extinguish the flames. Fire crews evaluated the injured driver at the scene before transporting him to an area hospital. Authorities reported that his injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening. There was no immediate update available regarding his updated medical condition or whether he had been discharged from the hospital by Sunday night.
Investigators have announced that a summons has been requested for a 37-year-old Holbrook man in connection with the crash. He faces charges including operating under the influence of liquor as a second offense, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, a marked lanes violation, and speeding.
Holbrook Police Chief David Del Papa commended the responding officers for their decisive actions in the face of extreme danger. Noting that the rapid arrival and immediate intervention of the personnel averted a fatal outcome, Chief Del Papa praised the officers for doing an incredible job under hazardous conditions.
