Inside Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck’s Approach to Co-Parenting Their Three Children

Actors Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck share three children—Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel—and have maintained a committed co-parenting relationship following their separation in 2015 after a decade of marriage. The former couple welcomed their first daughter, Violet Anne, in December 2005, six months after marrying in Turks and Caicos. They later expanded their family with the arrivals of Seraphina in January 2009 and Samuel in February 2012. Despite their divorce becoming final in 2018, both actors have consistently prioritized being present for their children.

Affleck has spoken publicly about the division of childcare responsibilities, noting that the children split their time evenly between parents on a weekly schedule. In interviews, Affleck praised Garner’s parenting, while Garner has similarly commended Affleck for taking an active role in daily caregiving, describing him as a wonderful and freeing partner in raising their children. To accommodate family life, Affleck adjusted his professional commitments, prioritizing Los Angeles-based projects and directing work to avoid extended time away from home.

The eldest child, Violet, born on December 1, 2005, graduated from high school and began her freshman year at Yale University in the fall of 2024. Alongside her academic pursuits, Violet has engaged in public health advocacy, attending an L.A. County Board of Supervisors meeting in July 2024 to advocate for mask availability and COVID-19 testing, speaking at the United Nations in September 2025 regarding the long-term impacts of COVID-19, and contributing an academic paper to Yale’s Global Health Review reflecting on experiences during the 2025 Los Angeles wildfires. Violet also made rare public appearances with her parents, attending a White House State Dinner with her mother in December 2022 and joining her father at a public event in July 2023.

Middle child Seraphina, born in January 2009, balances secondary education with part-time employment at a local retail shop, as both parents established boundaries regarding financial independence and work ethic. Seraphina frequently joins family outings, including attending a Red Sox game at Fenway Park in July 2025 alongside Garner, Affleck, and Samuel.

The youngest sibling, Samuel, born on February 27, 2012, has been a frequent companion at sporting events with his father. Affleck and Samuel have been spotted courtside at NBA games featuring the Los Angeles Lakers and have bonded over baseball and golf. Garner took a six-month break from acting following Samuel’s birth before returning to her career with roles such as in the film Dallas Buyers Club after consulting with her former agent.

Both parents have navigated the challenges of raising children in the public eye. To counter media speculation, Affleck noted that he and Garner established an open dialogue with their children regarding tabloid stories. Additionally, the actors have shared humorous anecdotes about family dynamics, including teenage pushback on parental advice.
