Experts Share Essential Guide on How Often to Clean and Replace Bed Pillows

Bed pillows accumulate significant wear and tear over time, absorbing direct contact with facial oils and skincare products that make regular maintenance essential. Cleaning experts recommend washing pillows every three to six months, while generally advising replacement every one to two years depending on individual condition.
Robin Murphy, chief cleaning officer at Maid Brigade, notes that physical condition dictates when a pillow has reached the end of its functional lifespan. Indicators include persistent lumpiness, failure to return to shape after fluffing, lingering odors, or a lack of proper head and neck support. Kadi Dulude, owner of Wizard of Homes, adds that permanent discoloration or stains that resist washing also signal the need for a new set.
Cleaning methods vary significantly based on pillow composition. Machine-washable varieties, such as down alternatives and polyester, should be laundered two to four times a year. Experts advise washing two pillows simultaneously on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent to maintain drum balance. For drying, low heat paired with dryer balls helps prevent clumping, and items must dry completely before covers are reapplied to prevent mildew.
Memory foam and latex pillows require different care because they generally cannot withstand machine washing. Cleaning procedures for these materials involve removing and washing the outer cover while spot-cleaning the core using gentle fabric sprays or stain removers rather than soaking the material in water.

To extend the lifespan of bedding, professionals recommend utilizing pillow protectors in addition to standard pillowcases. Similar to mattress protectors, these additions guard against moisture and bed bugs while offering hypoallergenic benefits for sensitive skin.
