Pedro Pascal’s Gladiator II Hits Number One on Netflix After Box Office Struggles

Ridley Scott’s high-stakes sequel, Gladiator II, has ascended to the top of the Netflix streaming charts in the United States. The film, which stars Pedro Pascal and Paul Mescal, claimed the No. 1 position on October 23, 2026, marking a significant resurgence for a production that faced a complex financial journey during its theatrical run.

Despite the film’s current popularity with home audiences, its performance in theaters was often characterized as underwhelming relative to its massive scale. Produced with a reported production budget of $250 million, the epic was under pressure to deliver substantial returns to justify its costs. While it did not reach the heights some industry forecasts anticipated, the film eventually grossed more than $462 million globally. This total included a domestic haul of over $172 million and nearly $290 million from international markets.

Directed by Ridley Scott, the film serves as a direct continuation of the narrative established in the 2000 original. The story shifts focus to Lucius Verus Aurelius, portrayed by Paul Mescal. Lucius, the son of Lucilla, is living under the name Hanno when Roman forces seize his home. He is subsequently forced into the brutal life of a gladiator, echoing the path of Maximus, whose death he witnessed years earlier.

The sequel is set in 209 AD, a period of history that finds Rome under the joint, often turbulent, rule of Emperors Caracalla and Geta. As Lucius fights in the Colosseum, he is forced to navigate the political rot of the empire and the legacy of his family. The production features a star-studded ensemble, with Pedro Pascal playing Acacius and Connie Nielsen reprising her role as Lucilla. Denzel Washington appears as Macrinus, while Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger take on the roles of the co-emperors Geta and Caracalla, respectively.

Review data suggests a divide between professional critics and general audiences. The film holds a 70 percent approval rating from critics, while audiences have responded more warmly, giving the sequel an 80 percent score. This viewer enthusiasm appears to have translated effectively to the streaming environment, where the film’s arrival has dominated the domestic top ten list.
