Analyst Names Casey Mize as Detroit Tigers’ Sole Free Agent Best Fit

As baseball’s offseason gets underway, early projections and free-agent fits are beginning to take shape across the league. Among the early analyses, former general manager and analyst Jim Bowden of The Athletic has singled out the Detroit Tigers just once in his breakdown of the top 40 free agents, identifying right-handed pitcher Casey Mize as the club’s sole “best fit” on the open market.

From a logistical standpoint, a potential reunion carries a certain internal logic. The Tigers previously traded Mize at the deadline only after determining they would have to move Tarik Skubal. As a former No. 1 overall draft pick whom the organization backed through extensive development hurdles, Mize delivered several strong outings in Detroit when healthy.

However, the projection has drawn mixed reactions given Mize’s trajectory following his trade to the San Diego Padres. His performance noticeably dipped after leaving Detroit, raising questions about his consistency. Some observers point to the potential impact of losing longtime pitching coach Chris Fetter, who worked closely with Mize through the majority of his major league career following his debut season.

Beyond performance metrics, durability remains a central concern for prospective suitors. Mize spent two separate stints on the injured list last season due to adductor issues, followed by another injury in a freak accident shortly after his arrival in San Diego. His history of health setbacks has left a portion of the fanbase skeptical about committing multi-year resources to the pitcher.

Bowden has projected a three-year, $54 million contract for Mize on the open market. That figure aligns relatively closely with recent market precedents, such as Jack Flaherty’s two-year, $35 million deal, making it a plausible financial commitment that falls within typical organizational parameters. While the Tigers have previously signaled an inclination toward familiar roster pieces and a measured approach to free agency spending, whether the front office will pursue a reunion with Mize remains to be seen as the winter market unfolds.
