Austin Reaves Praises Unselfishness After Lakers Overcome 18-Point Deficit Against Jazz

The Los Angeles Lakers improved their record to 3-0 on Sunday following a hard-fought victory over the Utah Jazz, a comeback win defined as much by collective unselfishness as it was by standout individual performances. While Luka Doncic captured widespread attention with a virtuoso 52-point scoring display, Austin Reaves continued his exceptional early-season form while pointing to a deeper cultural strength within the locker room.
Speaking to reporters on Spectrum SportsNet after the game, Reaves emphasized that the roster is entirely devoid of individual egos, with every player locked into whatever role is required to secure a victory. He noted that the team’s shared philosophy stems from basic basketball principles instilled in him by his family growing up.
“It’s just make the right play, it’s simple,” Reaves said. “You know I talk about it all the time and it’s something that my parents and my brother taught me growing up was, you play the game the right way, the game is gonna reward you.”
Reaves added that the group possesses a clear, collective understanding of individual roles and tactical expectations. According to the guard, mutual support in difficult situations forms the foundation of the squad’s early success.
“That’s, I think, the beautiful thing about our team is there’s no egos, there’s no anything. You just wanna win basketball games and however that happens is the main thing,” Reaves said.
The path to victory in Utah required overcoming a sluggish start. The opening quarter proved difficult for the visitors, who struggled to find energy and fell behind by 18 points despite an early scoring push from Doncic. However, the contest shifted dramatically in the second period as Collin Sexton injected immediate energy into the lineup, while Reaves erupted for 15 of his 29 total points during the quarter.
Once the momentum swung in Los Angeles’ favor, the pressure remained constant. Matisse Thybulle and Ziaire Williams maintained defensive intensity and hustle, while Sandro Mamukelashvili also made key contributions off the bench, and Doncic converted a series of critical shots to close out the first half.
Head coach JJ Redick pointed to the team’s ability to erase an 18-point deficit as a vital early-season test of character. Rather than allowing the early deficit to spiral out of control, the squad dug in defensively and executed offensively. Redick noted that the comeback victory can serve as an important reference point for the team’s resilience moving forward.
Beyond the established rotation, the Lakers boast significant depth with a versatile group of interchangeable wing players, including Thybulle, Williams, Jake LaRavia, and Quentin Grimes, alongside injured players Adou Thiero and Cameron Carr awaiting their eventual returns. This structural depth means individual playing time and specific matchups will likely fluctuate depending on the night and who holds the hot hand. Yet, as Reaves indicated, maintaining a unified focus above personal statistics allows the rotation to function smoothly without friction as the season progresses.
