Apple Releases iOS 27.2 Bringing Apple Pencil Support to iPhone Duo and Edge Light for Video Calls

Apple has officially released iOS 27.2, introducing long-awaited features for its foldable smartphone lineup alongside broader software updates across its ecosystem. A primary focus of the new release is the integration of Apple Pencil support for the iPhone Duo, fulfilling a commitment made by the company to bring stylus compatibility to the device.

The iPhone Duo features a 7.6-inch internal display and a 5.4-inch external screen. With the installation of iOS 27.2, users can leverage the expanded inner screen real estate for writing, drawing, and precise navigation, making the device function closer to a compact tablet in specific workflows. Apple has adjusted parts of the iOS 27 interface to maintain a consistent user experience across both folded and unfolded states, providing a more spacious canvas for note-taking, document markup, and creative tasks.

Despite the new hardware compatibility, the utility of the Apple Pencil remains tied to application support. Third-party developers must still optimize their apps for the foldable display ratios and unique interaction paradigms of the device, as stylus support does not automatically translate to seamless tablet-app execution.

In addition to stylus integration, iOS 27.2 introduces an Edge Light feature designed to improve illumination during video calls. The tool generates supplementary lighting from the edges of the display to brighten a user’s face in low-light environments, targeting indoor and nighttime video conferences where ambient lighting is often insufficient.

Artificial intelligence capabilities powered by Siri have also been expanded in this release. Siri AI can now suggest follow-up actions directly within the Messages application based on conversation content. Furthermore, language support for these AI functions has grown to include French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. To address the proliferation of synthetic media, the Photos application and Image Playground are integrating Google’s SynthID technology. This watermark system embeds detectable markers into AI-generated images to assist in identifying machine-created content, though detection remains limited to files utilizing compatible watermarking methods.

Several native applications received targeted adjustments in the update. The Apple TV app on the iPhone now supports individual user profiles, allowing multiple household members to manage their viewing preferences separately. Apple Podcasts revised its Up Next queue, splitting the interface to highlight New Shows and Keep Listening sections for easier navigation. Apple Music features a redesigned application icon, and FaceTime group calls now support dual-camera capture, enabling users to broadcast simultaneous video feeds from both the front and rear cameras during a conversation.

Alongside the iPhone software deployment, Apple rolled out concurrent updates for its broader device ecosystem, including macOS 27.2 Golden Gate, watchOS 27.2, visionOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2, and HomePod 27.2.
