Activists and Journalists Report Assaults by Settlers in West Bank

Activists and journalists operating in the occupied West Bank have reported being targeted in physical assaults by armed Israeli settlers, drawing renewed attention to safety concerns for press and human rights workers in the region.
Russian activist Adele Shoko stated via social media that she, US journalist Jasper Nathaniel, and Israeli-Russian activist Andrey X were accosted, beaten, and threatened in the Palestinian village of Umm al-Khair, located in the Masafer Yatta area. According to Shoko, the assailants also stole equipment and personal items during the confrontation.
Video footage published online by Shoko depicts several men, some carrying weapons, striking Nathaniel and Andrey X. Additional video shows Israeli authorities escorting Nathaniel away as he calls out that he had just been physically attacked. Shoko noted that Nathaniel was pepper-sprayed and subsequently taken away by forces, while Andrey X sustained a concussion and lost consciousness multiple times. Shoko reported that Andrey X was placed in an ambulance but diverted to a police station rather than a hospital, where he remained detained and allegedly denied medical treatment.
The incident follows a separate violent episode on October 16 in Abu Falah, northeast of Ramallah. In that event, masked Israeli settlers targeted Palestinian farmers harvesting olives, ignited trees, and threw stones using slingshots. Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine, who was documenting the violence while wearing a protective vest marked with the word “PRESS,” was beaten, robbed, and hospitalized. Levine stated that settlers kicked and struck her repeatedly on the ground before making off with her passport, telephone, and camera gear. A Palestinian man also sustained a gunshot wound to the leg after Israeli soldiers arrived at the scene and discharged live ammunition alongside tear gas.
The October 16 assault prompted official reactions, including a condemnation from Washington Post Executive Editor Matt Murray regarding the attack on a journalist performing her professional duties. In addition, several United States lawmakers urged an official investigation into the violence and called for measures to curtail settler attacks in the area.
