No. 4 UConn Hosts Purdue in Hartford for Final Preseason Test

The No. 4-ranked University of Connecticut men’s basketball team is set to conclude its three-game preseason schedule on Tuesday night, returning home to Hartford for a marquee exhibition against Purdue. The matchup at PeoplesBank Arena marks the Huskies’ unofficial home debut and serves as the final preparation before the regular season officially tips off in November.

UConn enters the Tuesday night contest with a perfect 2-0 record in exhibition play. The Huskies opened their preseason with a dominant 72-52 victory over Syracuse at Mohegan Sun on October 13, followed by a 78-70 win on the road against Michigan State on October 20. Their opponents, the Boilermakers, also arrive in Hartford undefeated this preseason after securing wins against Ball State and Purdue Fort Wayne.

While exhibition results do not count toward the programs’ all-time series record, the matchup carries significant historical weight. Purdue currently leads the series 4-2, a rivalry that dates back to the 1938-39 season. However, UConn has won the most recent encounters, including a meeting in the 2009 NCAA Tournament and the 75-60 victory in the 2024 National Championship game that secured the Huskies’ latest title.

Sophomore transfer Nik Khamenia has led the Huskies’ offensive efforts through the first two preseason games. Khamenia is currently averaging 15.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game while demonstrating accuracy from the perimeter, where he has connected on 5-of-9 three-point attempts. His early performance also includes five assists and two steals.

Defensively, the Huskies have been anchored by Silas Demary Jr., the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year. Demary Jr. is averaging 14.5 points, six assists, and six rebounds during exhibition action. His leadership on the floor has been a catalyst for a UConn defense that held Syracuse and Michigan State to a combined shooting average of just 35.3 percent.

In the frontcourt, big man Na’jai Hines has provided high-efficiency scoring, averaging 12.5 points and 5.0 rebounds while shooting 75 percent from the field. He is joined in double-figures by BIG EAST Preseason Freshman of the Year Colben Landrew, who is contributing 10.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and three steals per game.

UConn has also seen consistent production from its bench. Freshman Junior County is averaging 6.0 points and 3.5 rebounds, while he and Nils Machowski have combined to shoot 50 percent from three-point range in their reserve roles, providing a critical scoring punch off the pine.

Tuesday’s game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off. The contest will air locally on WSFB and will be available via streaming on UConn+ for a one-time pay-per-view fee of $9.99. Randy Brochu and four-time national champion Tom Moore are scheduled to provide the commentary for the broadcast.

Following the conclusion of this preseason slate, the Huskies will return to Hartford to begin the regular season. Their official opener is scheduled for Monday, November 2, at 9 p.m. against Gardner-Webb.
