UAE and Canada Forge Closer Economic Ties Through Trade Pact and Port Deal

The United Arab Emirates is strengthening its economic and trade relationship with Canada as Dubai-based logistics giant DP World advances discussions on a potential agreement to connect its global shipping network to Manitoba’s Port of Churchill on Hudson Bay. This prospective partnership agreement would explore linking the northern port and its associated railway directly into DP World’s extensive international infrastructure.

Industry projections indicate that the venture could eventually establish a vital trade corridor designed to transport key Canadian commodities, including grain, liquefied natural gas, and critical minerals, to markets across Europe and the Middle East. This infrastructure initiative carries an estimated price tag of $57 billion.

The diplomatic and economic thaw arrives just months after officials faced initial hesitance regarding large-scale foreign capital inflows. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s flagship investment agency previously delivered a blunt assessment to Emirati officials seeking to deploy billions of dollars into Canadian markets, indicating that immediate avenues for deployment were limited.

That dynamic has shifted significantly with the arrival of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed in Ottawa. The visit is anchored by the formalization of a newly agreed comprehensive trade pact alongside a substantial $50 billion investment commitment from the UAE, signaling a renewed alignment between the two nations on major economic infrastructure projects.
