Tucson Unified Targets Magee Middle for Consolidation as District-Wide School Closures Mount

The Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) continued a week of difficult announcements on Thursday, naming Magee Middle School as the fourth campus recommended for consolidation as part of a sweeping plan to address declining enrollment and funding shortfalls. Under the proposal, Magee would be merged with Sabino High School, creating a combined campus located approximately seven miles away.
Superintendent Dr. Gabriel Trujillo is expected to formally present the recommendation to the TUSD Governing Board. The move follows a pattern of daily announcements from the district, which has warned for months that as many as 10 schools could face closure or consolidation by the 2027-28 school year.
According to district data, Magee Middle School has been particularly hard-hit by shifting demographics, losing more than half of its student body since 2018. The proposed consolidation aims to stabilize resources by moving students to Sabino High, which is roughly a 15-minute drive from the current Magee campus.
To accommodate the influx of younger students, the district plans to establish a “secondary academy” within the Sabino High grounds. This model is designed to keep middle and high school populations distinct. District officials informed parents in a letter that the plan includes separate buildings, dedicated classrooms, and staggered lunch periods to ensure the middle school experience remains age-appropriate despite sharing a campus with older students. TUSD also indicated that teachers and staff currently at Magee would be transferred to the new academy to provide continuity for students.
The Magee-Sabino announcement is the latest in a rapid-fire series of disclosures from the district. On Wednesday, Oct. 21, TUSD recommended consolidating Cragin Elementary into Blenman Elementary. That followed an Oct. 20 announcement regarding Dunham Elementary’s proposed move into Marshall Elementary, and an Oct. 19 notice regarding the consolidation of Hudlow Elementary into Sewell Elementary.
District officials have stated that they will continue to release the names of additional schools identified for closure or consolidation daily through next week. The goal is to inform all impacted families, staff, and schools by Oct. 27.
The process now moves toward a period of public comment and official deliberation. The TUSD Governing Board has scheduled a meeting for Oct. 27 at 5:30 p.m. at Palo Verde High School. This session will include a “call to the audience,” providing parents and community members their first formal opportunity to address the board directly regarding the proposals. The meeting is expected to last several hours as the board hears from the various impacted communities.
A broader community meeting dedicated to the closures is scheduled for Nov. 17. The final decision rests with the governing board, which is currently slated to hold a definitive vote on the consolidations during its Dec. 8 meeting. If approved, the changes would not take effect until the start of the 2027-2028 academic year.
