Trump Condemns Vandalism at Iwo Jima Memorial Following Suspect’s Arrest

President Donald Trump has sharply condemned the vandalism of an Iwo Jima memorial near Marine Corps Base Quantico, calling the attack a disgrace after local law enforcement arrested a suspect accused of using a sledgehammer to damage the monument.

When asked by a reporter for his message regarding the desecration of a memorial honoring fallen Marines and what penalties the perpetrator should face, Trump criticized the act. What he did to that beautiful memorial was terrible, Trump stated, adding that the suspect entered the country through what he described as the open border under the Biden administration before being apprehended.

Trump did not specify what legal punishment he believes the suspect should receive for the incident.

Prince William County police identified the arrested individual as 27-year-old Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano of Stafford, Virginia. Authorities reported that officers responded to a call regarding property destruction near Richmond Highway and Fuller Road in Quantico at approximately 10:13 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21. Upon arrival, police found the suspect actively striking the statue with a sledgehammer.

Officers detained Maldonado Soriano without incident at the scene. The vandalism resulted in significant destruction, including the removal of one figure’s head and extensive damage to the rest of the sculpture. Police officials estimated the total financial losses at hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Maldonado Soriano faces multiple criminal charges, including felony destruction of property, trespass with intent to damage property, and felony injury to a monument. According to a police report issued October 22, he was held without bond pending a future court appearance. Investigators have not yet established a definitive motive for the attack.

Background details released following the arrest indicate that Maldonado Soriano entered the United States illegally in December 1999. He subsequently obtained Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals status in 2014 during the Obama administration, with that protection later extended in 2024 under the Biden administration before expiring earlier this year.
