Kansas City Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo Praises Seahawks Receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba

Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo faces a daunting defensive assignment ahead of Sunday night’s matchup against the Seattle Seahawks as he attempts to contain wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba. The reigning Associated Press offensive player of the year has proven virtually unstoppable over the past two seasons, currently leading the National Football League across three major receiving categories: receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. Speaking during his Thursday press conference, Spagnuolo offered high praise for the star playmaker’s physical abilities and personal reputation.
“He’s elite, really elite,” Spagnuolo remarked in a transcript provided by the team. Noting that the NFL features numerous prominent wide receivers, Spagnuolo mentioned conversations with acquaintances around the league, including Seattle head coach Mike Macdonald and assistant head coach Leslie Frazier. Beyond raw athletic talent, Spagnuolo emphasized that feedback regarding Smith-Njigba consistently highlights his exceptional character. Combining high-level talent with strong personal character creates a formidable combination for opponents, according to the defensive coordinator.
“And you have that kind of talent and that kind of high character, that’s a pretty good thing to have. And then you’re on the other side of it, it’s a pretty tough thing to defend against. So, we’ve got a lot of respect for him,” Spagnuolo added.
Smith-Njigba’s productivity through the first six games of the season underscores that assessment. The receiver has accumulated 49 receptions for 717 yards and seven touchdowns. His statistical consistency is further demonstrated by his lowest output of the campaign so far, which stands at five catches for 76 yards during a victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on October 4. The Chiefs defense will attempt to keep him under that output when the two teams square off on Sunday night.
