Phoenix Suns Navigate Devin Booker Up and Down Performance Early in Season

The Phoenix Suns stand at 1-1 after their opening two contests, offering fans an early glimpse into what promises to be a volatile campaign for star guard Devin Booker. The season began with a stark 41-point blowout loss against the Portland Trail Blazers, a game in which Booker and his teammates struggled offensively, prompting immediate panic among supporters on social media questioning whether the franchise cornerstone had lost a step. Just days later, however, Booker rebounded emphatically by pouring in 43 points to lead the Suns past the Golden State Warriors.

Such sharp fluctuations are expected to define much of the upcoming 82-game schedule. Approaching his 30th birthday, Booker remains the centerpiece of a franchise committed to constructing a contender around his abilities. Yet tactical questions persist, including the coaching staff’s ongoing deployment of Booker as a point guard for stretches and the challenge of pairing him in the backcourt alongside fellow scorer Jalen Green. Despite these experimental lineups and demanding expectations, Booker has maintained a professional demeanor without public complaint.

Roster construction around Booker introduces additional hurdles for the team’s competitive outlook. New addition Miles Bridges has yet to meet expectations early in the year, and when Booker encounters an off-shooting night, matchups against formidable opponents like the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs present steep challenges. Conversely, high-scoring outings against struggling squads do not automatically validate sweeping championship aspirations, despite owner Mat Ishbia publicly declaring earlier that the team will win a series this season.

Shooting mechanics, particularly from beyond the arc, remain an area of scrutiny. Through the first two games of the season, Booker has shot 2-of-7 from three-point range, with all of those attempts coming in the victory over the Warriors. Omitting three-point attempts entirely during a blowout loss drew criticism given his status as the team’s primary offensive weapon, though long-range inconsistency has been a recurring theme dating back to the preseason and beyond. Carrying a career 35.2 percent mark from deep, Booker operates with limited floor spacing from a starting lineup that features Bridges, Dillon Brooks, Jalen Green, and Khaman Maluach—none of whom command elite three-point gravity.

These structural spacing limitations place an immense burden on Booker to generate offense across all levels on a nightly basis. While he will undoubtedly deliver numerous high-scoring performances over the course of the grueling schedule, those individual explosions will not single-handedly secure a championship, just as cold shooting stretches do not warrant tearing down the roster.
