Stars of ‘Nobody Wants This’ Detail the Complicated Romantic Turn for Morgan and Sasha

In the world of the hit series ‘Nobody Wants This,’ the romantic tension between Morgan and Sasha has moved from a sub-plot of magnetic curiosity to a central complication. In the seventh episode of the third season, the show takes a cinematic departure from its Los Angeles roots, sending the duo across the country to New York for a pivotal encounter that fundamentally shifts their dynamic and the show’s broader family architecture.

The installment follows Morgan, played by Justine Lupe, and the recently single Sasha, portrayed by Timothy Simons, as they travel 3,000 miles under the professional pretext of Morgan appearing on ‘Watch What Happens Live.’ However, the physical distance from their daily lives in California serves as the catalyst for an long-awaited romantic ignition. According to Simons, the production team intended for the episode—which unfolds over the course of a single day—to evoke the intimate, dreamy atmosphere of Richard Linklater’s romance classic ‘Before Sunrise.’

For Lupe and Simons, the episode represented a rare opportunity to step into the roles of romantic leads. Both actors noted that their previous casting often leaned toward comedy or awkwardness rather than genuine attraction. Lupe admitted to early concerns about the physical chemistry on screen, joking that they feared looking like “muppets looking out with just a bunch of limbs,” but ultimately, the depth of the characters’ shared history carried the moment.

The climax of the episode occurs in a shared New York hotel suite. Lupe highlighted a specific, anxiety-laden tracking shot that captures Morgan pacing across the room, which she described as “divine intervention” facilitated by the room’s layout. Director Richard Shepard, who is married to co-showrunner Jenni Konner, was credited with prioritizing a cinematic feel despite a tight shooting schedule. While the characters initially swore to maintain their friendship for the sake of their siblings—Joanne (Kristen Bell) and Noah (Adam Brody), who are planning to marry—the evening ended with a long-simmering kiss initiated by Sasha.

Simons pointed out that the timing of the relationship is particularly fraught. Because their families are on the verge of becoming officially intertwined through the marriage of Joanne and Noah, the romantic development threatens to cause significant internal strife. Lupe explained that she only felt comfortable exploring the Morgan-Sasha pairing once the character of Esther, Sasha’s ex-wife, decided to move on from her relationship with him.

“There’s not much that’s very sexy or comedic about the aftermath of destroying a family,” Lupe noted, adding that she was curious to see how the magnetic curiosity between the two would play out in a more mature setting. Simons emphasized that Sasha’s separation from Esther was handled with emotional maturity rather than betrayal, noting that Sasha did not leave his marriage because of his interest in Morgan, even though the attraction was present.

The aftermath of the New York encounter, however, remains unsettled. Following their night together, Sasha wakes up to a note revealing that Morgan has fled the city. Lupe described this as a characteristic move for Morgan, who often retreats when situations become real or “scary.” By the Season 3 finale, the secret is out as Esther learns about the hookup, leaving the relationship in a state of “right person, wrong time.”

Reflecting on the audience’s divided loyalties between the original marriage and the new spark, Simons noted a balance in fan reactions. While some root for a reconciliation between Sasha and Esther, others have been waiting for the Morgan-Sasha pairing since the first season. Lupe encouraged the debate, stating that the beauty of the story lies in eliciting such varied and strong emotional reactions from the viewers.
