No. 3 Montana State Hosts No. 22 Weber State in High-Stakes Big Sky Battle

After four weeks away from their home turf, the No. 3 Montana State Bobcats are preparing for a high-stakes return to Bobcat Stadium this Saturday. The matchup pits them against No. 22 Weber State in a contest that serves as a pivotal junction for the Big Sky Conference title race, with both programs currently jockeying for position at the top of the standings.

Montana State head coach Brent Vigen noted that the defensive challenge begins with Weber State’s signal-caller, Nate Dahle. Despite being a true freshman, Dahle has become the focal point of the Wildcats’ offensive scheme, showing a level of maturity that has impressed opposing coaches. Vigen highlighted the young quarterback’s versatility, noting that he currently leads the team in rushing attempts while maintaining a heavy presence in the passing game.

“He’s been very steady and I think they’re asking him to do a fair amount,” Vigen said. “He’s got the most rushing attempts on the team while throwing the ball quite a bit. Pretty impressive just for a young guy to be able to take that opportunity and run with it.”

For the Bobcats’ defense, led by safety Caden Dowler, the objective remains grounded in fundamental discipline. Dowler indicated that while the team respects Weber State’s ranking and talent, the defensive keys remain the same as any other week. The focus will be on neutralizing the ground game and preventing big plays downfield.

“Just stop the run, eliminate the vertical pass game, kind of like every single game,” Dowler said. “We know they have good players, we know they’re at the top of the conference for a reason right now.”

On the offensive side of the ball, Montana State quarterback Justin Lamson is emphasizing the need for cohesion and consistency. For Lamson, success on Saturday will be dictated by how well the Bobcats can establish their rhythm from the opening whistle and maintain it through four quarters. He characterized Weber State as a disciplined opponent that mirrors the Bobcats’ own focus on team-wide execution.

“I think it’s getting on them from the jump and just being consistent every single down and doing your job every single down,” Lamson said. “What I see out of Weber State so far from what I’ve watched is they’re a very cohesive unit. They play really hard for their coaches and they’re at the top of the conference. So we need to bring our A game just like we have to do with everybody in this conference.”

The tactical battle between the Montana State offense and the Weber State defense is expected to be aggressive. Vigen pointed out that the Wildcats utilize an active front and a variety of looks designed to disrupt a quarterback’s timing. Specifically, Vigen noted that Weber State is comfortable utilizing “zero pressure,” a high-risk, high-reward strategy that involves bringing six or seven pass rushers.

“They are fairly aggressive at the same time, so they’re willing to zero pressure you,” Vigen explained. Beyond the blitzing schemes, Vigen credited the Wildcats’ defensive line for its depth, which allows them to rotate players frequently and keep their front-line defenders fresh for late-game situations.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Bobcat Stadium in Bozeman. The game will be available for fans to watch on The Spot – MTN and ESPN+.
