New York Representative Mike Lawler Faces Democratic Challenger Cait Conley in Key House Race

Republican Representative Mike Lawler is campaigning for reelection in New York’s 17th Congressional District, facing a challenge from Democratic political newcomer Cait Conley. The district covers Rockland County, Putnam County, and parts of Westchester and Dutchess County.

Lawler initially secured his seat in the 2022 election by defeating a sitting Chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, marking the first time in over four decades that a Republican unseated that specific party leadership post. In the 2024 election cycle, he stood out as one of only three Republicans nationwide to win a congressional district that was carried by Kamala Harris.

Before entering federal office, Lawler grew up in Rockland County, graduated from Suffern High School, and attended Manhattan College. His prior legislative experience includes serving in the New York State Assembly for the 97th District. During his tenure in the state legislature, he sat on the Committees on Aging, Banks, Education, and Housing, while also serving as the ranking member on governmental operations.

During his congressional term in the 118th Congress, Lawler introduced 58 bills, with one successfully enacted into law. Among his legislative priorities and advocacy efforts, Lawler pushed for the Social Security Fairness Act, a measure designed to restore full retirement benefits to public servants such as teachers, police officers, and firefighters. He also backed efforts to expand the SALT deduction cap to $40,000, which proponents say provides property and income tax relief to a vast majority of Hudson Valley taxpayers. Additionally, he worked to renew the Undetectable Firearms Act, which prohibits the manufacture, import, sale, possession, or transfer of firearms that bypass standard walk-through metal detectors.

Challenger Cait Conley is mounting her first campaign for elective office as the Democratic nominee aiming to unseat Lawler in the district. The two candidates have traded sharp verbal exchanges through their campaign events and debates.

Lawler’s platform centers on economic relief, emphasizing pledges to lower energy and healthcare expenses, ease housing affordability pressures, and eliminate federal spending deemed wasteful. On public safety and security, his priorities include bolstering local law enforcement, addressing crime, securing the nation’s borders, pursuing immigration reform, and reinforcing parental rights within the educational system.

Regarding social policy, Lawler supports protecting in-vitro fertilization treatments, seeking compromise positions on abortion access, advancing responsible gun safety legislation, and conserving the local environment. His foreign policy and defense positions stress maintaining a robust national defense, ensuring military preparedness, and providing continued strategic backing for Israel.
