Marquez Secures Australian MotoGP Pole Despite Qualifying Crash in Wet Conditions

Ducati rider Marc Marquez overcame a turbulent start to Saturday’s qualifying session at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, securing a dramatic pole position for the Australian MotoGP. Amid soggy and slippery track conditions, the seven-times world champion shrugged off an early incident to edge out the competition ahead of the weekend’s races.

The qualifying session proved treacherous for riders as heavy moisture tested track limits. Marquez suffered an early setback in the second qualifying session when he lost his front end and slid off into the grass on the opening lap. Unscathed by the spill, the defending champion sprinted back to the Ducati garage, switched to his secondary motorcycle, and returned to the track to post a blistering lap time of 1:34.203, sealing his fourth pole position of the season.

Reflecting on the frantic sequence, Marquez acknowledged the gravity of his initial error. He noted that crashing on the opening lap leaves a rider without a recorded time, forcing an immediate recovery effort. Praising his crew’s swift response in preparing the alternative motorcycle, Marquez explained that he maintained his focus to replicate the feeling he found during free practice, eventually pushing everything to the limit on his final run.

Marquez’s brother, Alex Marquez of Gresini Racing, secured second place on the grid, while LCR Honda’s Johann Zarco rounded out the front row in third. Zarco had advanced earlier from the first qualifying session, successfully navigating the unpredictable weather dynamics that featured alternating rain and wind-driven drying periods.

Meanwhile, championship leader and title rival Jorge Martin of Aprilia finished the session fourth-quickest and will start from the second row for both Saturday’s sprint and Sunday’s main race. Martin currently leads the standings with 355 points, holding a razor-thin two-point advantage over Marquez, who sits at 353 points with five rounds remaining in the season, including the Australian event. Martin’s teammate, Marco Bezzecchi, qualified ninth and holds third place in the championship standings with 309 points.

Earlier in the day, local favorite Jack Miller of Pramac Racing delighted home supporters by topping the opening qualifying session. The weekend’s events also mark a milestone for the venue, as Sunday’s race represents the final MotoGP grand prix at Phillip Island before the Australian Grand Prix shifts to the streets of Adelaide starting next year.
