Clemson Offensive Struggles Echo Past Defensive Limitations as Tigers Prepare for Virginia Tech

Clemson defensive coordinator Tom Allen faced a restrictive roster last year that forced him to keep his play calling tightly bound. One year later, with a reinforced defensive personnel group, that unit is thriving on the field.

Now, a strikingly similar narrative has emerged on the offensive side of the ball for the Tigers. Offensive coordinator Chad Morris addressed reporters on Wednesday, detailing the distinct challenges limiting the offense and explaining the caution required in his play calling.

Morris pointed directly to an inexperienced offensive line and a freshman quarterback who is learning on the fly as primary factors behind the unit’s current struggles. The offensive statistics reflect those growing pains, with Clemson ranking near the bottom nationally across numerous key metrics.

Ahead of a crucial Atlantic Coast Conference matchup against Virginia Tech on Saturday, Clemson sits 15th in the conference in scoring offense, averaging 22.3 points per game. The team ranks 16th in total offense with 340.7 yards per game and anchors the conference standings as the last team in passing offense at 187.5 yards per game. Additionally, the Tigers rank 130th nationally in touchdown passes thrown, placing them dead last in that category.

Admitting the current output falls short of his initial expectations when he accepted the position last January, Morris emphasized the necessity of tailoring schemes to available personnel.

Where I wanted us to be and where we are now, it is not it, Morris said. Well, a lot of that is we have to adjust and adapt to our personnel and what is going on and our quarterback and where he is at. I cannot put too much on him. That is the worst thing I can do is compound things with him.

Head coach Dabo Swinney previously faced substantial criticism for bypassing the transfer portal to secure an experienced veteran quarterback, as well as opting against casting a wider net to recruit additional offensive linemen.

Morris and the Tigers will look to reverse their offensive trajectory on Saturday night when they host the Hokies at 7 p.m. in a game broadcast on ESPN.
