Kevin Durant Takes Blame for Missed Shots After Mavericks Edge Rockets

Houston Rockets forward Kevin Durant shouldered the blame following a tight, hard-fought loss to the Dallas Mavericks at the American Airlines Center, pointing directly to his own missed opportunities that prevented his team from building a safe lead.

The narrow defeat came just over a week after Houston handled Dallas in their season opener. In the latest chapter of the Texas rivalry, the game remained fiercely contested until the final possessions. Durant noted that the turning point centered on a handful of key moments where the Rockets had clean looks to break the game open but failed to capitalize.

“I think we got a lot of good looks. We could have blown the game open, and we missed two or three, and I missed one, wide-open looks to go up 12, 13 points. That would have lagged the landscape of the game, but that’s just how basketball is. You’re not going to make them all the time,” Durant said.

Refusing to deflect blame toward the officiating, the schedule, or his teammates, the veteran scorer kept the focus squarely on his own execution. Later in the evening, he reiterated his perspective, stating plainly that he simply missed too many shots.

At the same time, Durant offered high praise for the Mavericks, who maintained their composure throughout the contest after erasing an early deficit and watching Houston carry a lead into halftime. Dallas secured the victory down the stretch behind tough shot-making, capped by a decisive spinning, fading jumper from Mavericks forward Cooper Flagg.

“You’ve got to give Dallas credit. They played a poised game all the way through. They were up early, we took the lead back, got it to half, and they just kept running. It was one of those old-fashioned slugfests. You’ve got to respect both teams for coming out here with that energy,” Durant said. Regarding the game-clinching shot, he added, “You’ve just got to tip your hat to great players. Spin, fade, jumper. It was a tough shot.”

Examining the defensive side of the floor, Durant acknowledged that Houston fell short of the standards set under head coach Ime Udoka. While Dallas hit difficult contested shots, the Rockets also conceded a few too many clean openings. Even so, Durant emphasized that the team remains committed to its defensive principles.

With an immediate turnaround on the schedule, the Rockets have little time to dwell on the setback. Houston faces a back-to-back game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, an opponent Durant expects to test his squad despite their current injuries.

“We care about every game. We want to win every game. It means a lot to us. It’s good when you take an L that you can quickly bounce back and try to right your wrongs the next night. That’s the great part about the NBA, it takes the sting out of the loss a little bit when you’ve got another one coming up,” Durant said. Looking ahead to Oklahoma City, he noted, “They’re banged up a lot, but they still play with that identity and that championship culture. It’s going to be another tough test for us.”
