Controversial Podcaster Hasan Piker Draws Crowds and Criticism During Minnesota Midterm Tour

Political commentator and left-wing streamer Hasan Piker visited Minnesota on Monday for a sold-out public forum and podcast recording, injecting his national online presence directly into the state’s closing midterm election cycle. Hosted by Minnesota state Sen. Omar Fateh and featuring U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar at the Theatre In The Round on the University of Minnesota’s West Bank, the event drew intense interest and immediate political scrutiny.

Organizers stated that the roughly 250-seat venue sold out within five minutes of going public, highlighting an effort to mobilize voters under the age of 40. During the program, Piker discussed various topics ranging from Operation Metro Surge to his outlook on the future direction of the Democratic Party.

“I love this state. People keep asking me why I keep coming back here. It’s awesome. It’s the Somali food. It’s the culture. But also I keep telling people Minnesota has pretty radical politics,” Piker told the audience.

The appearance quickly became a flashpoint due to Piker’s controversial past remarks. Critics have pointed to a past statement in which he asserted that America deserved 9/11—comments for which he later apologized—along with accusations of anti-Semitism, drawing sharp rebukes from across the political spectrum.

Addressing the scrutiny during an interview on his stream with CNN prior to the event, Piker defended his political alignment while addressing the friction surrounding his invitation. “It’s frustrating. I’m a lifelong democrat. I’ve voted democrat my entire life. I will never vote Republican. I oppose Republicans. I don’t just oppose Trumpism. I oppose the Republican Party and all matters of conservative economics, conservative social policies,” Piker said, adding that the focus of local Democrats this close to the election reflects party priorities.

The visit also drew critical responses from prominent state Democrats. Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Klobuchar described some of Piker’s past comments as reckless, while Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Peggy Flanagan emphasized that she has consistently condemned hateful rhetoric.
