Fort Bend County Judge Race Ignites Debate Over AI Endorsement Video

A high-stakes political contest for Fort Bend County Judge has erupted into a bitter controversy over the use of artificial intelligence in campaign media. The dispute centers on the race between Republican interim County Judge Daniel Wong and Democratic challenger County Commissioner Dexter McCoy, driven by a viral social media video that has sparked intense debate regarding political ethics, digital manipulation, and voter deception.
The contested video features individuals endorsing Wong with audio praising his personal support. While the footage quickly drew backlash, both camps have offered starkly different accounts of its origin and intent.
McCoy condemned the material, arguing that it misrepresents real community members without proper permission. He asserted that individuals whose images were used were made to say things they never consented to do, describing the situation as exploitative and unacceptable.
Following widespread criticism, Wong’s campaign removed the video from its social media platforms. In an official statement, the campaign maintained that the video was neither produced nor commissioned by their official team, asserting instead that it was created by an independent outside supporter who happens to be a Democrat backing the Republican judge.
Bobby Eberle, communications director for Wong, addressed the controversy by stating that the individuals depicted are genuine supporters whose likenesses were enhanced using AI tools. According to Eberle, the creator of the video assured the campaign that consent had been obtained from the participants.
“What I find very disappointing is the fact that Dexter McCoy and others are trying to make this some kind of racial issue, when the supporter and everyone featured in the video were Black Democrats who, in this particular race, are supporting Daniel Wong over Dexter McCoy,” Eberle said.
Wong’s campaign also redirected criticism toward McCoy, accusing him of missing meetings, skipping budget hearings, and attempting to weaponize race against fellow Democrats who support Wong. In response to those allegations during an interview, McCoy maintained that leadership requires total accountability. He stated that the buck stops with the leader and criticized attempts to shift blame.
Amid the escalating clash, McCoy announced that he is calling on the local district attorney to launch a criminal inquiry into the incident. The Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that it has not received any formal complaints regarding the matter.
The controversy underscores broader challenges facing campaigns as digital tools make distinguishing authentic recordings from computer-generated footage increasingly difficult on standard social media feeds. Technology analysts recommend utilizing digital verification platforms to run questionable media through detection tools to determine whether footage is AI-assisted or entirely synthetic.
