Florida Names Starting Quarterback Ahead of Georgia Showdown

The Florida Gators are turning back to Aaron Philo as their starting quarterback for Saturday’s high-stakes rivalry matchup against No. 3 Georgia, resolving a week-long health dilemma that kept the team’s offense under heavy scrutiny.

Florida enters the contest with a 5-2 overall record and a 3-2 mark in SEC play, keeping the program firmly in contention for a spot in the expanded College Football Playoff. Maintaining that momentum is critical following the Gators’ upset victory over Texas in Austin two weeks ago.

Quarterback availability has dominated the team’s preparation. Philo started the first six games of the season, guiding Florida to a 4-2 start before sustaining a right shoulder injury during a 38-19 defeat against South Carolina on Oct. 10. The injury sidelined him for the win over Texas, handing Tramell Jones Jr. his first career start. Jones capitalized on the opportunity by throwing for 155 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, while adding 41 rushing yards.

Both quarterbacks entered the week dealing with injuries and were listed as questionable on the SEC availability report, splitting practice reps while Philo eventually absorbed first-team work. Coach Jon Sumrall emphasized earlier in the week that the choice would hinge entirely on health and availability. On Friday, it was reported that Philo would reclaim his role as the starting signal-caller against Georgia, with Jones remaining available off the bench.

Philo, a 6-foot-1 junior from Bogart, Georgia, transferred to Florida ahead of the 2026 season following offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner from Georgia Tech. During his high school career at Prince Avenue Christian High School, Philo captured two consecutive state championships and surpassed the state’s career passing record previously held by NFL quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

In his debut season in Gainesville, Philo has completed 105 of 149 pass attempts, good for a 70.5% completion rate, accumulating 1,341 yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions across six appearances. He has also contributed 104 rushing yards and three rushing scores.

The decision to reinstate Philo marks an unexpected turn given the immediate success of Jones, who orchestrated a major road upset against a high-profile opponent in his collegiate starting debut. Despite that performance, Sumrall opted for Philo’s return as the Gators prepare for a pivotal stretch of their schedule.

Following Saturday’s contest, Florida faces a concluding four-game slate featuring matchups against Oklahoma on Nov. 7, Kentucky on Nov. 14, Vanderbilt on Nov. 21, and an intrastate clash against Florida State on Nov. 27.
