Mavericks Star Cooper Flagg Sidelined With Shoulder Sprain After Hard Fall in Indiana

The Dallas Mavericks will be forced to take the court without their leading star Saturday night, as the team confirmed that forward Cooper Flagg has been ruled out of the home game against the San Antonio Spurs. The decision follows an MRI performed on Saturday morning which revealed a mild sprain of his left shoulder.

The injury occurred during the final minute of the first half in Dallas’ victory over the Indiana Pacers on Friday night. Flagg, who had been dominating the flow of the game until that point, intercepted a pass near midcourt and was driving toward the rim for an uncontested dunk. Pacers defender Aaron Nesmith pursued from behind and committed a hard foul as Flagg went up for the basket. Officials ruled the play a Flagrant 1 foul after Flagg was knocked off balance and landed heavily on the baseline, absorbing the impact with his left shoulder.

While the Mavericks went on to secure a 121-105 win over Indiana, Flagg did not return to the contest after the fall. His absence on Saturday represents a significant blow to the Dallas rotation, particularly given his productivity in the limited minutes he played Friday. In just 17 minutes of action, Flagg had already recorded 14 points, six assists, five rebounds, three steals, and a block, leading all scorers at the time of his exit. Dallas held a commanding 77-43 lead at the intermission, allowing the team to manage the remainder of the game without their versatile sophomore.

Flagg’s injury comes amid a high-scoring start to his second season. In the Mavericks’ season opener on Wednesday, a 128-110 loss to the Houston Rockets, Flagg scored 32 points, signaling a potential jump from his award-winning debut campaign. Last season, Flagg averaged 21 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game on his way to being named the NBA’s Rookie of the Year.

Saturday’s game against the Spurs carries additional significance as the home debut of Mavericks head coach Dusty May. May joined the professional ranks this season after a successful tenure in college basketball, most recently leading the Michigan Wolverines to an NCAA championship last year. He will now have to navigate his first home appearance in Dallas without his primary offensive engine.

The Mavericks organization has not yet provided a specific timeline for Flagg’s return to the lineup, noting only that the forward is scheduled to be reevaluated by medical staff next week. The team will likely look to a combination of bench depth to fill the void against a divisional rival as they wait for further clarity on the severity of the sprain.
