Late Heroics and Trick Plays Define Early Week 8 College Football Action

The opening stretch of Week 8 in college football featured a flurry of dramatic finishes as unranked programs battled for conference positioning and bowl eligibility. While the nation’s top-ranked teams have yet to take the field this week, Thursday and Friday night action provided game-winning trick plays, last-second field goals, and dominant individual offensive performances that reshaped the standings in the ACC and the American Athletic Conference.

In Charlottesville, the Duke Blue Devils reached deep into their playbook to secure a narrow 19-16 victory over the Virginia Cavaliers. The decisive moment came with just over one minute remaining in the fourth quarter when star running back Nate Sheppard executed a 28-yard touchdown pass that stunned the Virginia secondary. Sheppard, who entered the contest as the leading rusher in the ACC, had been largely contained by the Cavaliers’ defense, finishing with only 55 yards on 15 carries. However, his arm proved to be the difference when his legs could not find the end zone.

The loss was the third in four games for Virginia (4-4 overall, 2-3 ACC), while Duke improved to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play. The Cavaliers struggled to find the final defensive stop necessary to hold their lead, allowing the Blue Devils to escape with the road win.

Simultaneously, the Army Black Knights relied on special teams to remain near the top of the American Athletic Conference standings. Kicker Dawson Jones connected on a 50-yard field goal as time expired to give Army a 38-35 victory at Tulsa. The game-winning kick capped a career day for Jones, who also converted a career-long 51-yard attempt in the first quarter and a 34-yard field goal just before the half.

Army’s signature ground game was effective throughout the contest, totaling 275 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Godspower Nwawuihe led the rushing attack with 135 yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Cale Hellums contributed 121 yards and three rushing scores. With the win, the Black Knights moved to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the American, keeping their conference championship hopes alive.

In Palo Alto, Stanford continued its trend of home-field dominance by edging NC State 31-28. Cardinal quarterback Davis Warren anchored the offense, throwing for 303 yards and four touchdowns to lift Stanford to a 4-4 overall record (2-3 ACC). The victory improved the Cardinal’s record at “The Farm” to 4-1 this season, with their only home defeat coming at the hands of the current No. 1-ranked Miami Hurricanes.

Despite the home success, Stanford faces significant challenges ahead. The program remains 0-3 on the road this year, having been outscored by an average of more than 44 points per game in hostile environments. That disparity will be put to the test immediately, as the Cardinal are scheduled to play three of their next four games away from home.
