Major CTA Loop Closures to Disrupt Four Rail Lines Throughout the Weekend

Chicago commuters and weekend travelers heading into the downtown area will face significant service disruptions starting early Saturday morning as the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) begins major infrastructure repairs on the elevated Loop tracks. The planned work will temporarily suspend or reroute service on four major rail lines—the Brown, Green, Orange, and Pink lines—requiring riders to utilize shuttle buses and alternative rail transfers to reach their destinations.

The service suspension is scheduled to begin at 4 a.m. Saturday and continue through 4 a.m. Monday. According to the CTA, the closure is necessary to complete track renewal and signal-switching infrastructure work at the Loop and Lake Junction, located near the intersection of Wells and Lake streets. This junction serves as one of the busiest rail interlockings in the United States, facilitating the movement of thousands of passengers through the city’s core daily.

Transit officials noted that the work is a critical component of a maintenance cycle that occurs approximately every 10 years. These upgrades are designed to ensure safe and reliable service while reducing the likelihood of unexpected infrastructure failures in the future. This weekend’s project marks the final phase of a larger repair initiative that began in the fall of 2025. While earlier stages of the project addressed two other sections of the junction, this weekend’s activity will focus on the remaining two sections.

The impact on riders will vary significantly depending on the line. For the Green Line, service will be split into two separate segments. Trains will operate between Harlem/Lake and the Clinton station, and separately between Roosevelt and the South Side terminals. To bridge the gap, the CTA will provide shuttle buses between the Clinton and Roosevelt stations. Passengers traveling from the South Side toward downtown also have the option to transfer to the Red Line at Roosevelt for continued service.

Brown Line service will be curtailed, with trains only operating between the Kimball terminal and the Merchandise Mart station. Commuters needing to reach the downtown Loop are advised to transfer to the Red Line at either the Belmont or Fullerton stations. Additionally, shuttle buses will be deployed to connect riders between Merchandise Mart and the Harold Washington Library-State/Van Buren station.

Orange Line service will also see modifications, with trains running exclusively between Midway and Roosevelt. Passengers attempting to travel between Roosevelt and the Loop will need to board shuttle buses running between the Roosevelt and Clinton stations.

Pink Line trains will bypass the Loop entirely this weekend. Service will operate between the 54th/Cermak terminal and the Racine Blue Line station. Riders intending to travel into the downtown area must transfer to the Blue Line at Racine to complete their trip.

The CTA has indicated that regular service on all affected lines is expected to resume in time for the Monday morning commute. Before service is restored, crews must complete the physical track and signal work and conduct a series of required safety tests to ensure the integrity of the new infrastructure.

To assist travelers, the CTA is placing signage and making customer alerts and announcements throughout the rail system. Transit officials are urging all passengers to allow for extra travel time and to check official customer alerts for specific shuttle bus stop locations and updated travel schedules before beginning their trips.
