Red Sox Legacy Lives on as Varitek Family Honors Pedro Martinez Birthday

The enduring camaraderie of the Boston Red Sox’s championship era was on display this week as the family of former captain Jason Varitek celebrated a milestone for another franchise icon, Pedro Martinez. Catherine Varitek, Jason’s wife, took to social media to send a warm tribute to Martinez as the Hall of Fame pitcher celebrated his 55th birthday.
The exchange comes at a reflective time for the Red Sox organization. The team is currently beginning its offseason following an 87-75 regular season finish in 2026. While Boston managed to secure a postseason berth, finishing third in the American League East, their playoff run was cut short after being swept by the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series (ALDS).
Martinez, a cornerstone of Boston’s drought-breaking 2004 World Series team, shared his gratitude for the occasion on X, formerly Twitter. “All I can do is thank God for everything and for another year of life,” Martinez wrote. Catherine Varitek responded to the post, writing, “Happiest birthday sweet friend,” accompanied by a heart emoji.
Martinez remains one of the most decorated pitchers in the history of the sport. Over an 18-season career that included stints with the Montreal Expos, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Philadelphia Phillies, his seven years in Boston defined his legacy. A three-time Cy Young Award winner, Martinez retired with a career record of 219-100 and a 2.93 ERA across 476 games and 409 starts. He was a central figure in the 2015 ceremony that saw his number 45 retired at Fenway Park.

Jason Varitek’s career was equally synonymous with the Red Sox. Selected in the first round of the 1994 MLB Draft out of Georgia Tech, Varitek spent all 15 seasons of his professional career in Boston. Known as “The Captain,” the catcher was a fundamental piece of two World Series championship rosters and was named to three All-Star teams.
Throughout his 1,546 games, Varitek maintained a .256 batting average, recording 1,307 hits and 193 home runs. He finished his career with 757 RBIs, 664 runs, and 25 stolen bases, establishing himself as one of the most reliable leaders in the clubhouse. His career-long tenure with a single franchise remains a rare feat in the modern era of the game.

The current Red Sox squad, managed by Chad Tracy, is looking to regain the championship form last seen during the team’s 2018 title run. Despite the disappointing end to the 2026 campaign at the hands of their division rivals, the organization continues to be defined by the high standards and close-knit bonds established by players like Martinez and Varitek during the early 2000s.
