Apple Unveils Redesigned iPad Mini Powered by A20 Pro Chip and OLED Display

Apple has announced a major hardware refresh for its compact tablet lineup, introducing a redesigned iPad mini built around an 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, the advanced A20 Pro processor, and IP67 water and dust resistance. The updated device marks the most substantial revision in the product’s history, combining a thinner and lighter chassis with significant performance gains tailored for artificial intelligence and graphics-intensive workflows.
Measuring 5.4 millimeters in thickness, the new tablet maintains the physical footprint of its predecessor while expanding the screen area through a 24 percent reduction in bezel width. The OLED panel delivers a contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1, support for the P3 wide color gamut, and peak brightness levels reaching up to 1200 nits, which is more than double the maximum brightness of the previous generation. It also features a 1-nit minimum brightness setting and offers an optional nano-texture display finish designed to reduce glare in bright outdoor environments.
At the core of the device is the A20 Pro chip, manufactured using a 2-nanometer process technology with an M-series inspired packaging architecture. The processor incorporates a 7-core graphics processing unit featuring Neural Accelerators embedded within each core, yielding up to 4.5 times faster artificial intelligence performance compared to earlier models. Graphics capabilities see a 2.7-fold increase through hardware-accelerated mesh shading, ray tracing, and dynamic caching, while a 6-core central processing unit provides up to 60 percent faster multithreaded task execution.
Configurations featuring 512 gigabytes of storage utilize a dual 16-core Neural Engine, bringing the total core count to 32 to support intensive on-device machine learning tasks and local large language models. Unified memory bandwidth has been doubled, enhancing responsiveness across complex creative and productivity applications.
Audio and visual capture components have also been revised. An acoustic display configuration pairs specialized woofers through the screen assembly with hidden tweeters to deliver increased volume and clearer high-frequency audio while maintaining a sealed enclosure necessary for the IP67 ingress protection rating. The 12-megapixel front-facing Center Stage camera has been relocated to the landscape edge for improved video conferencing ergonomics, and the 12-megapixel rear camera supports Smart HDR 4, 4K video recording at up to 60 frames per second, and an adaptive True Tone flash for improved document scanning.
Connectivity upgrades include the integration of the Apple-designed N1 wireless networking chip, which introduces support for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread protocols. Cellular configurations incorporate the second-generation C2 modem system, increasing data transfer speeds by up to 50 percent while improving energy efficiency and smoothing network handoffs between cellular infrastructure and wireless networks.
The device ships with iPadOS 27, introducing advanced conversational capabilities through Siri AI powered by Apple Intelligence. The system utilizes personal context understanding and on-screen awareness to assist with navigation, communication tasks, and photo editing tools such as upgraded Clean Up, Spatial Reframing, and the Image Playground application. Privacy protection is maintained through on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute architecture.
Physical accessories include a redesigned Smart Folio featuring a two-panel architecture built with TechWoven fabric in navy blue and taupe finishes. The tablet remains compatible with both the USB-C Apple Pencil and the Apple Pencil Pro, which supports squeeze and barrel roll inputs alongside Find My tracking functionality.
Apple has constructed the enclosure using 100 percent recycled aluminum and the battery with 100 percent recycled cobalt, bringing total recycled content across the device to 35 percent. Production processes utilize 40 percent renewable energy sources across the supply chain, aligning with corporate environmental targets for 2030.
Pre-orders open on Wednesday, October 28, across 36 countries and regions, with retail availability beginning Friday, November 6. The Wi-Fi configuration starts at $699 in the United States, while the Wi-Fi and cellular model begins at $849. Education pricing starts at $649 for the base configuration. Storage options span 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB in midnight and starlight finishes.
