Apple Unveils iPad Mini 8 Featuring OLED Display and A20 Pro Chip Starting at $699
Apple has officially introduced the iPad Mini 8, marking a notable hardware evolution for its smallest tablet line while bringing a series of modern performance and durability upgrades. The new model expands the screen size slightly from 8.3 inches to 8.5 inches. While it remains a traditional slate rather than a folding device, analysts note it enters the market alongside folding form factors like the iPhone Duo, though the two devices target distinct user experiences and are not expected to directly cannibalize each other’s audiences.
Among the most significant hardware updates is the adoption of an OLED display for the first time in the mini series. Previous generations faced user discussions regarding the so-called jelly scrolling effect during screen navigation, a phenomenon Apple previously characterized as normal behavior. Real-world testing will verify how the new OLED panel handles display fluidity. Additionally, the device maintains compatibility with both the USB-C Apple Pencil and the Apple Pencil Pro.

Performance is driven by the A20 Pro chip, though core configurations vary by storage tier. The 128GB and 256GB models feature a five-core CPU comprising two performance cores and three efficiency cores, paired with a 16-core Neural Engine. Meanwhile, the top-tier 512GB model, priced at $999, steps up to a six-core CPU and incorporates dual 16-core Neural Engines. Apple projects that these hardware specifications will sustain smooth system performance throughout the device’s operational lifespan.
Design modifications include relocating the front-facing camera to the center of the horizontal long edge, aligning with the Center Stage framing functionality found across other contemporary iPad models. For durability, the iPad Mini 8 secures an official IP67 dust and water resistance rating, a first for the compact tablet family. Industry observers point out that while the rating guards against accidental liquid splashes and static immersion, it does not guarantee protection against high-pressure water streams, bathroom steam, or showers.

Connectivity features receive a substantial boost with the integration of Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread support, providing faster data rates and improved reliability for users operating compatible routers and smart home accessories. Cellular-enabled configurations incorporate Apple’s proprietary C2 modem, delivering support for 5G sub-6GHz networks alongside gigabit-class LTE.
Pricing for the base 128GB model begins at $699, with 256GB and 512GB storage options available at higher price points, culminating in the $999 tag for the maximum capacity. Cellular connectivity options add an additional cost depending on the selected configuration. Pre-orders are scheduled to open on October 28, with official customer deliveries slated to begin on November 6. Despite the immediate rollout, questions remain regarding the long-term roadmap of the mini tablet category as folding mobile devices continue to evolve, though the iPad Mini 8 retains its status as Apple’s primary pocket-sized tablet offering.
