Prisoners Writer Aaron Guzikowski Tapped for New Alien Project Linked to Prequels

The Alien franchise is expanding further as 20th Century Studios and producer Ridley Scott have enlisted screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski to develop a new feature film set within the iconic sci-fi universe. Guzikowski, best known for writing the gritty 2013 thriller Prisoners, is tasked with crafting a story that reportedly returns to the narrative roots established in Scott’s more recent directorial entries in the series.
While specific plot details remain under wraps, the project is being described as a standalone mystery that diverges from the immediate timeline of 2024’s Alien: Romulus. Though Romulus was a commercial success that reinvigorated interest in the franchise, a direct sequel to that film is currently in a state of limbo. This new project instead seeks to bridge the gap with the two prequels Scott directed in the 2010s: Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. According to sources familiar with the development, the primary connective tissue for this new story involves the amoral android character previously portrayed by Michael Fassbender. However, at this early stage, Fassbender is not officially attached to the project, and no director has been named to lead the production.
This project marks a significant professional reunion for Guzikowski and Scott. The two previously collaborated on the HBO Max science fiction series Raised by Wolves, which Guzikowski created. Scott served as an executive producer on that series and directed its first two episodes, marking his first foray into television directing since the start of his film career in the 1970s. Their shared history with high-concept, philosophical science fiction is expected to influence the direction of this new Alien installment.
Scott and Michael Pruss will produce the film through their Scott Free production banner. On the studio side, J.R. Young is overseeing the development for 20th Century Studios. Guzikowski was reportedly brought in by Scott to jumpstart the creative process for this specific narrative path.
Guzikowski has built a reputation for writing intense, character-driven dramas. In addition to the Denis Villeneuve-directed Prisoners, his credits include the 2017 remake of Papillon and the Sundance Channel series The Red Road. He is currently maintaining a busy slate of projects, which includes an original sci-fi feature for director Jon Watts at 20th Century, an adaptation of a Philip K. Dick short story for Sony Pictures, and an adult-oriented animated feature based on the hit Hideo Kojima video game Death Stranding.
