Philippine Authorities Open Investigation Into Thomas Markle Following Abuse Image Allegations

Authorities in the Philippines have initiated a formal investigation into Thomas Markle, father of Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, following allegations that he possessed child sexual abuse images. The inquiry was confirmed on Friday by Philippine Justice Undersecretary Nicholas Ty.
“Our Anti-Trafficking and Anti-OSAEC task force in Cebu is currently investigating the matter,” Ty stated, referencing the nation’s specialized unit targeting online sexual abuse and exploitation of children.
The allegations first surfaced on Friday in a report published by the British newspaper The Sun. According to the publication, Thomas Markle’s son reported his father to police in the Philippine city of Cebu, where the 82-year-old had been residing. The report alleged that a significant collection of illicit images was discovered inside his residence. Additionally, reports indicated that family members had contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States regarding the matter. The FBI did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and British police similarly did not immediately comment.
Thomas Markle was quoted by the British newspaper the Daily Mail dismissing the accusations as untrue and describing them as “sick lies.” Efforts to reach him directly for comment were unsuccessful.
Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, released a public statement expressing deep concern over the developments. She stated that she had been aware of troubling allegations since 2018 and had maintained no contact with her father since the period leading up to her royal wedding that same year. Explaining her decision regarding her family, she noted that she had prevented her father from having contact with her children, Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, in order to protect them.
“I am deeply distressed at the news that has come to light in the last 24 hours, and my thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed,” the Duchess said in her statement. She added that she had been shown a letter sent to British police in 2018 containing disturbing claims and was informed at the time that authorities were reviewing them. “My sincerest hope is that justice will be fully served and that the priority remains the safety and protection of innocent children,” she concluded.
Estrangement between the Duchess and her father became public shortly before her 2018 wedding to Britain’s Prince Harry, when Thomas Markle announced he would not attend due to health issues following an admission that he had staged paparazzi photographs. Prince Harry, Meghan, and their children relocated to England in August following a six-year residence in California.
