Meghan Markle Reveals 2018 Knowledge of Child Abuse Allegations Against Her Father

Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, has broken her silence regarding a criminal investigation into child sexual abuse material allegedly found at her father’s former residence in the Philippines. In a statement addressing the development, the duchess revealed that she has been aware of “disturbing allegations” against her father, Thomas Markle Sr., for six years, reframing the narrative surrounding her long-standing estrangement from him.
The investigation centers on claims made by the duchess’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., who reported finding four large boxes containing hundreds, and potentially thousands, of illicit images at his father’s former home. Following the report, authorities in the Philippines confirmed that the matter is being handled by a dedicated anti-human trafficking and child sexual exploitation task force.
Responding to the reports, the Duchess of Sussex stated she was “deeply distressed” by the recent news and expressed that her thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed. She clarified that her knowledge of the situation dates back to the year of her royal wedding. According to the duchess, a letter was sent to the Metropolitan Police and the Royalty and Specialist Protection unit in 2018, which was subsequently shared with her. She noted that the letter contained troubling allegations and that she had received assurances at the time that an investigation was underway.
This revelation provides a new context for the public rift between the duchess and her father, who famously did not attend her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry. Meghan stated that the distance she maintained and her decision to prevent her father from having contact with her children—7-year-old Prince Archie and 5-year-old Princess Lilibet—was a deliberate measure to ensure their safety. She suggested that past media characterizations of her choice to cut ties should now be viewed through the lens of these allegations.
In the Philippines, official actions are moving forward. Interior Minister Jonvic Remulla confirmed that national police have seized a computer belonging to Thomas Markle Sr. to perform a comprehensive digital forensic analysis. Philippines Department of Justice Undersecretary Nicholas Ty also stated that the task force is actively investigating the claims.
Thomas Markle Sr. has forcefully denied the accusations. Speaking from his current residence, he described the claims as “sick lies” and maintained his innocence regarding the possession of any such material.
The timing of the duchess’s statement has sparked significant public debate and criticism regarding her previous silence. Broadcasters and commentators have questioned why the allegations were not made public earlier if the duchess believed there was a risk to other children. Critics noted that while the duchess has cultivated a public persona as an advocate for child welfare, she remained silent for years while the investigation reportedly stalled or remained private.
Further scrutiny has been directed toward Prince Harry’s past comments regarding the family rift. In a 2022 documentary series, the Duke of Sussex suggested that the breakdown of Meghan’s relationship with her father was his own fault, stating at the time that “if Meg wasn’t with me, then her dad would still be her dad.” Observers have questioned why the couple would present that narrative to the public if they were already aware of serious allegations involving child sexual abuse material in 2018.
As the forensic investigation of the seized computer continues in the Philippines, the duchess expressed her hope that justice would be served. She emphasized that the priority must remain the protection of innocent children, even as the breadth of the recent discoveries is described as more sickening than previously imagined.
