Mayor Mamdani Announces 350 Free Tickets to New York City Marathon Finish Line

New York City is opening up one of the most exclusive views in global athletics to the public, as Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani on Monday unveiled a plan to distribute 350 free tickets for the finish line of the upcoming TCS New York City Marathon. The initiative, launched in collaboration with New York Road Runners (NYRR), seeks to ensure that the final moments of the 26.2-mile journey are accessible to local residents.
Scheduled for Sunday, November 1, the marathon is expected to host approximately 60,000 runners. The course, which spans all five boroughs, begins at the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and concludes in Central Park. The Grandstands, where the free tickets will be allocated, are situated along the final 200 meters of the race, providing a front-row seat to the emotional conclusion of the event.
“Sports belong to the people, and we’re making sure New Yorkers can experience the special joy of the New York City Marathon,” Mayor Mamdani said during the announcement. He noted that the runners, many of whom train for years for the occasion, deserve a crowd ready to cheer them home as they cut across the city to the Central Park finish.
The giveaway comes as the city prepares to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the marathon’s five-borough course. Originally established in 1970, the race has grown into a massive logistical undertaking, drawing more than 2 million spectators and fans to the streets of New York. While spectators line the majority of the route for free, access to the finish line Grandstands typically requires a paid ticket, with prices starting at $55.
Rob Simmelkjaer, CEO of New York Road Runners, described the marathon as a powerful display of community and the human spirit. He emphasized the significance of the partnership with the city, stating that the organization is thrilled to give more New Yorkers the opportunity to witness the determination and joy of runners crossing the line.
Interested residents can enter the ticket drawing online at on.nyc.gov/2026marathon. The entry window is currently open and will close on October 26 at 11:59 p.m. To participate, entrants must be at least 18 years old. Winners will be notified shortly after the deadline and will be eligible to receive up to two tickets. While the primary ticket holder must meet the age requirement, the second ticket can be used by a guest of any age.
The New York Road Runners organization, which manages the event, produces 60 races annually for both adults and youth. The New York City Marathon remains its flagship event and stands as one of the world’s largest and most prestigious distance running competitions.
