Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s Ballon d’Or Aspirations Halted by ACL Injury Following Stellar PSG Campaign

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s stellar 2025-26 campaign with Paris Saint-Germain has been abruptly halted by a severe anterior cruciate ligament injury, effectively ending the 25-year-old winger’s pursuit of individual accolades for the foreseeable future. The devastating knee injury occurred during PSG’s 4-2 Champions League victory over Barcelona and is expected to sideline the Georgian star for the best part of a year.

Before the injury struck, Kvaratskhelia had established himself as a prominent figure in the global football landscape. Although he was unranked in earlier lists, bookmakers had positioned him as the fifth favorite for the Ballon d’Or, placing him ahead of established names like World Cup winner Rodri and Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise. While the trophy will now remain out of reach, his contributions at club level defined one of the most productive periods of his career.

The 25-year-old secured two major winners’ medals during the 2025-26 season, helping PSG claim both the Ligue 1 title and the Champions League trophy. At the domestic level, PSG manager Luis Enrique managed his minutes carefully, often preserving the winger for European fixtures. Consequently, Kvaratskhelia was limited to 28 appearances and 18 starts in the French top flight, yet he still managed to record eight goals and four assists. This output translated to a goal-involvement rate of once every 123.5 minutes.

His most decisive performances, however, came on the European stage. In 16 Champions League appearances, Kvaratskhelia registered 10 goals and six assists, failing to register a goal involvement in only three of those matches. His campaign was highlighted by a crucial two-goal display in a 5-4 thriller against Bayern Munich during the semifinal first leg, followed by an assist in the return fixture. In the final against Arsenal, he earned the equalising penalty that ultimately helped set up PSG’s victory in a penalty shootout.

These exploits earned Kvaratskhelia the official Champions League Player of the Season award. Beyond raw statistics, his trademark ability to beat defenders with blistering pace, agile footwork, and intelligent movement made him a constant threat down the wing for opposing backlines.

Ultimately, international factors also played a role in shaping his award prospects. Georgia’s absence from the World Cup deprived him of the opportunity to showcase his talents on the biggest international stage, which had complicated his broader case for the golden orb. With a long rehabilitation process now ahead, Kvaratskhelia’s immediate focus shifts to recovery rather than individual trophies.
