Instagram Launches High-Performance Apple TV App to Challenge YouTube Dominance

Instagram is making a major push into the living room with the launch of a dedicated application for Apple TV, signaling a strategic shift as parent company Meta seeks to capture a larger share of the home streaming market. The app’s arrival on the Apple platform follows a relisting in the App Store that confirms compatibility across iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV hardware.
The timing of the release coincides with an upcoming hardware refresh for Apple TV. A new iteration of the streaming device, expected to launch in less than a month, is reported to feature significantly increased computing power that rivals desktop performance. Meta appears to be leveraging this improved hardware to support a more robust version of Instagram that goes beyond simple photo viewing, focusing instead on high-bandwidth video and live interaction.
While Instagram is traditionally associated with vertical, portrait-oriented content designed for mobile devices, the new TV application introduces support for horizontal, landscape-style videos. This shift is necessary to accommodate the 16:9 aspect ratios of modern televisions and represents a fundamental change in how the platform presents content. Beyond standard Reels, the TV app is designed to host longer-form video, episodic series, and live streams. Meta is also exploring the integration of subscriptions on the TV interface, a move that places Instagram in direct competition with YouTube for both viewer attention and creator revenue.
Meta’s strategy hinges on the belief that its short-form video content, which has proven highly engaging on mobile devices, can successfully transition to a communal viewing environment. To support this transition, the company has reportedly been working with content creators to streamline the process of uploading and streaming on the platform, ensuring that high-definition video is optimized for larger displays.
Although the Apple TV launch is a major milestone for the platform’s expansion, Apple is the last of the major television ecosystems to receive the dedicated app. Meta began initial testing of the TV form factor in late 2025 on Amazon Fire TV devices before expanding the rollout to Samsung smart TVs in mid-2026. The move to Apple’s ecosystem completes a multi-year effort to establish a permanent presence on home entertainment centers.
By moving into long-form and episodic content, Meta is attempting to diversify Instagram’s utility beyond quick-scroll consumption. If the platform can successfully migrate even a small portion of the massive audience currently dominated by YouTube, the shift toward television-native formats could represent a significant new revenue stream for the company.
