Aggressive Somali Rap Lyrics Accompany Ilhan Omar Video Amid Federal Criminal Investigation

A social media post by Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has drawn intense scrutiny after translations of the accompanying background music revealed aggressive lyrics directed at enemies. The 27-second video, posted to the platform X, shows Omar and her husband, Tim Mynett, on a serene lakeside stroll in Minnesota, captioned with the phrase, “Less scrolling, more strolling. Enjoying our beautiful Minnesota lakes.”
However, the audio track—a Somali rap song titled “Nimaan Ciilayba Icaaya” by artist Ilkacase Qays—carries a message of confrontation and punishment. According to translations of the lyrics, the first verse warns that the narrator has been given strength by the Almighty and promises that any confrontation will result in the target suffering and screaming by nightfall. The lyrics describe a narrator who will “teach you a lesson” and keep an opponent “awake throughout the night,” ending with the claim that the enemy will “scream like a demon.”
Later portions of the song, which were not featured in the brief clip but are part of the original track, include boasts about throwing people into a well and imposing taxes on enemies. The song concludes with a vow to dominate and shame those who oppose the singer. The timing of the post, appearing just days after federal agents conducted a raid on her home, has led to interpretations that the choice of music may be a coded response to her legal and political challengers.
Rep. Omar currently faces an escalating federal criminal investigation into several aspects of her personal and financial history. On October 12, agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) executed a search warrant at her Washington, D.C., residence. During the raid, investigators seized her smartphone, passport, laptop computers, and various notebooks. The probe is reportedly multifaceted, focusing on her immigration history, naturalization paperwork, and longstanding allegations concerning her 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi.
Central to the investigation is whether Omar or her late father provided inaccurate information regarding her age or identity on official immigration documents. Additionally, investigators are reviewing allegations that her marriage to Elmi was a legal maneuver involving a sibling, a claim Omar has repeatedly and categorically denied. A Department of Justice filing associated with the search listed the congresswoman as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar,” though the filing did not provide a specific explanation for the discrepancy. Omar responded to the filing on social media, asserting, “My name has always been Ilhan Omar.”
Financial disclosures have also become a focal point for federal authorities. U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C., Jeanine Pirro, indicated that investigators are reviewing an accounting error that resulted in a massive shift in Omar’s reported 2024 net worth. Initial filings suggested a net worth of as much as $30 million, which was later corrected to no more than $65,000.
The legal developments have coincided with a sharp exchange of rhetoric between Omar and former President Donald Trump, who recently suggested that the ongoing investigations could result in the congresswoman’s arrest or deportation. Omar has dismissed the probes as a “politically motivated smear campaign” designed to intimidate her. In a formal statement released earlier this month, she characterized the investigations as an escalation of a decade-long effort by Trump to target her with “baseless lies.”
Despite the pressure of the federal inquiry and the seizure of her personal property, Omar has maintained a defiant public stance, stating she “will not be silenced.” The investigation remains ongoing, and federal officials have not yet announced whether formal charges will be brought as a result of the evidence collected during the recent searches.
